Headteacher charged with child abuse images

A Liverpool primary school headteacher has been charged over indecent child images.

Matthew Hargreaves was previously the principal of King’s Northway Primary Academy in Wavertree before his arrest last week on the charges.

The 47-year-old from Rochdale is currently in police custody awaiting sentencing on three counts of making category A, B and C indecent images of children.

He will be sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court on July 27 for the offences which took place between April 2021 and May this year shortly before his arrest.

Acting principal Mark Newton sent a letter to the school’s parents and carers on Wednesday (July 1) confirming the recent developments involving Hargreaves.

However the interim headteacher reassured them that the charges he stands accused of ‘do not involve students at King’s Northway Primary Academy’.

He wrote: “As soon as we were informed of his arrest several weeks ago by police colleagues, he was immediately suspended from his role as principal as part of robust local authority and Great Schools Trust safeguarding procedures.

“We understand that this news is concerning. Please be assured that the safety and wellbeing of our pupils remain our highest priority.

“During this time, we are making support available to any members of our school community who may need it.”
