Murder arrest over man’s city centre death

A man has been arrested after a death in Liverpool city centre.

Police were called to the You Matter building, formerly the YMCA, on Leeds Street at around 3.50am on Wednesday (April 8) after reports a man in his 40s had been found dead inside.

A post mortem will be carried out to establish the cause of death.

Detectives later detained a 55-year-old man on suspicion of murder. He has been taken into police custody for questioning.

You Matter launched as a rebranded independent charity earlier this year from YMCA Together, which had operated in the city for the past 180 years.

A Merseyside Police spokesperson said: “A 55-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and he is in police custody to be questioned.

“Officers remain at the scene as inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances of this incident.”
