A man has died just days after a street attack in Anfield.
Police received a report that two men were assaulted by a group following a disagreement on Oakfield Road at around 1.30am on Sunday (February 1).
Both victims suffered injuries with a 53-year-old having swelling to his face while a 54-year-old sustained head and rib injuries during the incident.
Officers attended the scene but both men declined medical attention.
Following the incident, the 54-year-old man returned to Scarborough where he sadly passed away on Tuesday (February 3) following a medical episode.
A post-mortem will take place to establish his cause of death.
CCTV and witness enquiries are being carried out and police are appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or motorists who were in the area at that time to contact us.
It is believed that two taxi drivers had pulled over during the incident which was also witnessed by a member of the public who may have captured it on their phone.
Detective Inspector Natalie Charlesworth said: “First and foremost our thoughts and condolences are with the family of the man who has died.
“We are appealing for anyone with information on the assault to please come forward to assist the investigation.
“North Yorkshire Police are leading the investigation into his death, we are keeping an open mind until we know the cause of death, and are conducting extensive enquiries so his family can get answers.
“We are aware that people were in the area and may have witnessed the incident and we urge them to please contact us as soon possible.
“We also very keen to speak to the two taxi drivers and the member of the public to please contact us as a matter of urgency.”
