Plans to redevelop the former Royal Liverpool Hospital site have been submitted.
The Prescot Street building is currently in the process of being dismantled after all medical facilities were moved to a new base on Mount Vernon Street in 2022.
Full demolition of the old hospital is expected to be completed this spring.
A formal planning application for the soon-to-be vacant space is now in process which includes a number of initiatives to open up the previously closed space.
They include a north-south link road as well as new footpaths, cycleways and public green spaces as well as a temporary staff-only car park off Prescot Street itself.
NHS University Hospitals of Liverpool Group who own the site first opened in 1978 told the city council that the move will ‘allow for better flow of traffic around the hospital estate and ease congestion on the surrounding highway network’.
A planning document, which is targeting an autumn start date if approved, stated the upgrades will “significantly improve connectivity” across the new hospital site.
It added: “At present, the majority of users are reliant on Mount Vernon Street to the east and Daulby Street to the west to navigate the estate, creating inefficiencies and limiting ease of access between key facilities.
“The proposed scheme introduces a fully integrated network of roads, footpaths, and cycle routes that will link critical points across the site, promoting seamless movement for staff, patients, and visitors.
“This approach not only encourages active modes of travel, supporting health and sustainability objectives, but also enhances vehicular circulation by providing improved facilities for drivers and reducing congestion on the surrounding highway network.”
