Street evacuated twice for ‘suspicious powder’

Homes in Anfield have been evacuated twice due to a ‘suspicious powder’.

Police first searched a property on Douglas Road at around 2.30pm on Sunday (February 1) as part of investigations into human remains found in St Helens.

Officers located a quantity of white powder during their forensic search and temporarily closed the road and evacuated a number of adjacent properties.

Around 20 households were affected as a bomb disposal squad removed the powder and took it to open land for a controlled explosion to be carried out.

However residents were again displaced after police found more bags of white powder in the previous property at around 1.45pm on Monday (February 2).

The road is again temporarily closed and a number of houses surrounded the property are being evacuated as a precaution.

Merseyside Police later confirmed that the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team had safely removed the powder for examination.

George Gordon, 65, is currently facing two charges in connection with concealing the remains discovered in Gerards Court on January 8.
