A Bootle shop worker was stabbed multiple times by her estranged husband.
Nilani Nimalarajah, 44, died during the incident at Low Cost Food and Wine on Stanley Road in June 20 last year by Nimalarajah Mathiyadaranam.
The 47-year-old had already been banned from contacting his former partner, who lived above the store with their 17-year-old daughter, prior to the fatal attack.
Liverpool Crown Court heard on Wednesday (January 14) that mother-of-three Nimalarajah was stabbed 18 times by Mathiyadaranam in her chest and head.
The defendant, from Widnes, wiped his eyes as police bodycam of his teenage daughter was shown moment after discovering her mother on the shop floor.
Annabel Darlow KC told the jury that Mathiyadaranam had carried out the assault on his wife after not being invited to a family event relating to their second daughter.
She said that he carried out a ‘merciless, sustained and brutal attack’ with such ferocity that the knife he used snapped during the late afternoon assault.
Mathiyadaranam denies murder possessing a bladed article in public. The trial continues.
