Parking charges in Liverpool city centre are set to increase in April.
Free on-street parking was scrapped last year as the city council backed plans to extend the hours of enforcement from 6pm until 11pm despite firm public opposition.
The local authority is now proposing a fresh hike to spaces with some areas seeing mark-ups as high as 20% on their current rate if the latest changes are approved.
Councillors are set to vote on a proposal next week which a report prepared for the city’s leaders claims will ‘support financial recovery and sustainability’ for the body.
If approved, a 30-minute parking ticket in the city centre area will rise from £2 to £2.30 with an hour set to cost motorists £4.40 instead of the current rate of £4.
Council-owned car parks including Mount Pleasant, Victoria Street and the M&S Bank Arena are anticipated to face increases at an average of more than 8%.
The report states: “The proposed increases will generate additional income to reinvest in transport infrastructure, and recover increasing costs associated with enforcement, maintenance, and technology upgrades.
“On-street charges will remain cheaper than the Core Cities average, and Off-street car parks will remain cheaper than the average fee for private sector car parks in Liverpool for the majority of parking periods.”
