Fire engulfs Woolton Hall for second time

One of Liverpool’s oldest buildings has been engulfed by a blaze.

Fire crews were called to Woolton Hall shortly after 8pm on Tuesday as five engines and an aerial appliance attempted to tackle the three-storey inferno.

The fire at the Grade I listed building measures 100 by 100 metres in size and lead to neighbouring Speke Road being closed in both directions.

Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that the roof has collapsed in the incident and an adjacent building had been involved in the incident.

Residents nearby are being advised to keep their doors and windows shut while those with existing medical conditions should keep medicine nearby.

Built in 1704, Woolton Hall previously served as a manor home, a private school and an army hospital before being saved from demolition in the 1980s.

A huge fire previously affected the structure in 2019 which saw it added to Historic England’s ‘at risk’ register two years later as a Category A site.
