Merseyrail launch ‘tap-and-go’ ticket system

A new ‘tap-and-go’ ticketing system has been rolled out on Merseyrail.

The new schemes allows passengers to swipe in and out using MetroCard linked to their bank accounts to make journeys across the Liverpool City Region rail network.

Launched by Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram, travel bosses claim the initiative will remove the need to queue for tickets and guarantee the lowest fare on all journeys.

It comes after a two-month pilot and a second phase later this year will allows passengers to use bank cards and devices such as phones or watches to pay.

Neil Grabham, Merseyrail’s managing director, said: “The introduction of Tap & Go across the Merseyrail network represents a significant advancement in our efforts to make rail travel simpler, faster and accessible for all.

“We’re proud to support this forward-thinking initiative, which prioritises customer’s experience by eliminating barriers to travel and ensuring the best value fares are always available.

“This marks another important step in our ongoing commitment to delivering a modern, customer-centric railway that remains deeply connected to the communities we serve.”
