A Labour MP has been suspended after being recorded punching a man.
Security footage showed Mike Amesbury knocking the man to the floor with a blow to the face before standing over him and hitting him six more times.
The representative for Runcorn and Helsby was also heard shouting “You won’t threaten me again, will you?” as bystanders attempted to intervene.
Police confirmed that the incident took place in the early hours of Saturday in Frodsham and that a 55-year-old man had been interviewed under caution.
Labour confirmed on Sunday that Amesbury has had the parliamentary whip removed while the incident was investigated.
“Mike Amesbury MP has been assisting Cheshire Police with their inquiries following an incident on Friday night,” said a spokesperson.
“As these inquiries are now ongoing, the Labour party has administratively suspended Mr Amesbury’s membership of the Labour party pending an investigation.”
