Steve Rotheram to challenge Joe Anderson for Liverpool metro mayor

Steve Rotheram has entered the race against Joe Anderson to become the Liverpool city region’s first elected metro mayor.

Walton MP Rotheram will go head to head with current Mayor of Liverpool Anderson to become the Labour candidate who will appear on the ballot paper.

The metro mayor will oversee £900m of public services across Merseyside and Halton under a 30-year central government devolution deal.

Mr Rotheram and Mayor Anderson are the only Labour candidates who have publically declared their interest in the role.

Rotheram said his priorities will include fighting for social justice, investing in infrastructure and tackling homelessness in the area.

The metro mayor is a new position that will be created as the Government seeks to devolve more powers to the cities.
