Mayor slams Concert Square mass gathering

The Mayor of Liverpool has slammed crowds that gathered in Concert Square.

Revellers packed into the city centre’s popular nightspot on Tuesday as bars closed for the final time before new lockdown measures came into effect.

Videos circulated on social media showed hundreds descending on the streets around Concert Square and showing virtually no regard for social distancing.

Attempts by police to disperse the crowd were met with resistance as a group of party goers are alleged to have attacked a patrol car as it entered the area.

Mayor Joe Anderson condemned the mindless actions of those converging in Concert Square as the city continues to battle rising Covid-19 infection rates.

“These pictures shame our city. Attacking our brave police officers is unacceptable,” he wrote on Twitter.

“Our health service is creaking. 300 in Hospital and 30 people dead in week.

“Ignoring these facts is why we are in Tier 3 measures.”

A Tier 3 restriction on the Liverpool City Region will be enforced from 5pm this Wednesday (October 14, 2020) to limit the spread of coronavirus.

Pubs and bars, gyms and gaming facilities including bingo halls are all required to cease trading as part of the new Government sanctions.
