Man admits to Liver Building firework attack
A man has pled guilty to launching fireworks at the Royal Liver Building.
Matthew Egglesden fired a rocket at the Grade I-listed building on June 26 as thousands of people celebrated Liverpool’s Premier League title victory.
The 19-year-old’s act led to a small fire breaking out on one of the Liver Building’s balconies which was put out by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service.
Police estimate that the act of vandalism caused £10,000 worth of damage on an evening marred by further ugly scenes by violence and drug-taking.
Various local authorities condemned the widespread public disorder including Jurgen Klopp and the Anfield club itself, who branded it ‘wholly unacceptable’.
Egglesden, from Scarisbrick, pleaded guilty to a charge of to arson with intent to destroy or damage the building or being reckless in doing so.
Solicitors defending the Lancashire resident told Liverpool Crown Court that he had no previous convictions and was currently in full-time employment.
He is due to be sentenced on August 21, when a full cost of the damages caused by the Liver Building fire will be confirmed.
