Ex-Liverpool player Andre Wisdom is in hospital after being stabbed in a city robbery.
Wisdom spent nine years in the ranks at Anfield before joining Derby County in summer 2017 having made just 22 first-team appearances for the club.
The 27-year-old had returned to the local area to visit relatives in Toxteth following his side’s 2-1 win over Championship rivals Reading last weekend.
It is believed Wisdom was getting out of his car when he was approached and stabbed several times before the assailant robbed him and left the scene.
He was taken to hospital, where his condition is stable, and is expected to make a full recovery from what Derby describe as an ‘unprovoked’ ordeal.
“Andre Wisdom has been the victim of an unprovoked assault and robbery,” read a club statement.
“He sustained injuries which resulted in him being admitted to hospital.
“The club will focus its efforts on supporting Andre and his family.”
Merseyside Police are understood to be investigating the incident.
