Two charged following Pier Head disorder

A 19-year-old man has been charged with causing criminal damaged after he launched fireworks at the Liver Building.

On Friday night thousands of people took to Liverpool’s Pier Head to celebrate Liverpool winning the Premier League despite restrictions being in place and against pleas from the club, the council and Merseyside Police.

Videos circulated online show revellers aiming fireworks at the Liver Building before it landing and causing a fire thought to have caused £10,000 in damage to the iconic building.

Matthew Egglesden of Scarisbrick , Lancashire has been charged with causing criminal damage to the Royal Liver building and firing fireworks in a public place, (namely the Pier Head). He is due to appear in Liverpool Magistrates Court today.

A 32-year-old man from St Helens has been left in a serious condition in hospital after he was assaulted at the mass gathering. This has resulted in a 26-year-old man being charged with GBH. He will also appear in court on June 29.
