The road signs on Penny Lane have been defaced over claims that they are related to the slave owner James Penny.
The road markers have had the word Penny removed from them and the word “Racist” written on them instead. It is understood this took place on Thursday night.
A representative for the city’s International Slavery Museum said that the claims can not be confirmed at this time and further research as to the origin on the street name would be required.
The City’s mayor Joe Anderson said that he was “frustrated” by the “defacement of our street signs”.
“[It] does nothing to further advance the argument and the debate around Black Lives Matter here in Liverpool,” he said.
“It isn’t just about the artefacts and street names, it’s also about how we change the fundamental things that are causing disadvantage and inequality within our city.”
