Wirral man arrested over PPE theft

A 40-year-old man from Rock Ferry has been arrested after police received a tip off that he had been stealing PPE equipment.

Gary Edwards is to appear in court this morning after police found a huge haul of equipment including face masks and respirators at his home.

It is understood that the police acted on information reported to them and Edwards was originally arrested on suspicion of “theft by employee”.

A spokesperson for Merseyside Police said “A 40 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of theft by employee.

“Officers attended at an address in Bromborough, today, Friday 1 May, where a quantity of personal protective equipment (PPE) was seized.

“The man is currently in custody where he will be questioned by detectives.”

Detective Inspector Nick Suffield said: “Despite the Coronavirus lockdown our investigation work is ongoing and we will continue to act on information supplied to us.”

“We have charged a 40 year-old man with theft by employee.

“Gary Edwards was remanded in custody to appear at Liverpool magistrates court tomorrow, Saturday 2nd May.”
