Coronavirus shuts down Merseyside schools

Schools, colleges and nurseries on Merseyside will all close until further notice.

The decision to enforce an immediate shutdown from Friday was taken as the United Kingdom continues to deal with the outbreak of the coronavirus.

GCSE and A-Level exams will no longer take place in May and June, with pupils still able to obtain qualifications through unknown non-examination forms.

Several schools across the region had already been forced to enforce partial closures ahead of the Government’s announcement on Wednesday afternoon.

Bebington’s Co-Op Academy was only open for Year 11 and Year 13 students after a teaching staff shortage left the school unable to operate at full capacity.

Formby High School advised all of its Year 9 pupils to stay off for the remainder of the week for the same reasons as their Wirral counterparts.

The Academy of St Francis of Assisi in Tuebrook detailed a staggered timetable on Wednesday that saw students permitted to attend the school until 2pm.
