Walton MP denies singing anti-Semitic lyrics

A senior Liverpool MP has denied claims he sang anti-Semitic song lyrics.

Dan Carden was accused of making the references in a rendition of ‘Hey Jude’ by The Beatles while on coach trip returning from the Cheltenham Festival last year.

The Merseyside politician, who is standing for re-election in Walton at next month’s General Election, is alleged to have sang ‘Hey Jews’ during the trip.

Mr Carden, a member of Jeremy Corbyn’s shadow cabinet, was said to have been one of several Labour MPs to sing the line alongside politicians from other parties

However the 33-year-old vehemently denied the allegations on Saturday.

“I have been categorical in my denial about allegations relating to a coach trip some twenty months ago,” he wrote on Twitter.

“This was a coach full of journalists and MPs. If anyone genuinely believed any antisemitic behaviour had taken place, they would’ve had a moral responsibility to report it immediately.

“Yet this allegation is only made now when a general election is imminent.

“I stand by my record as an anti-racist campaigner. I would never be part of any behaviour that undermines my commitment to fighting racism in all its forms.”

The accusations about Mr Carden come 24 hours after a prospective Liverpool MP was forced to apologise for abusing female politicians on social media.

Ian Byrne, who won Labour’s nomination to stand in West Derby for the December 12 elections, said he was ‘deeply sorry’ for the Facebook posts.

They included sharing an image which attacked House of Lords peer Michelle Mone and referring to Liverpool-born Tory MP Esther McVey as ‘a b*****d’.

He previously apologised for other offensive remarks that insinuated Boris Johnson’s mother had been raped by predatory paedophile Jimmy Savile.
