Sean Cox will make an emotional first return to Anfield this weekend.
Cox suffered life-changing injuries after an assault by Italian hooligans outside the stadium before Liverpool’s Champions League semi-final with Roma in 2018.
The father-of-three underwent 18 months of treatment in his native Ireland before recently moving to a speech and movement facility in the North West.
A Liverpool Legends side played a Republic of Ireland XI at Dublin’s Aviva Stadium in April in a game which raised £700,000 for his rehabilitation trust.
Both Cox and his members of his family are now set to attend Sunday’s Premier League fixture with Manchester City in the directors’ box as invited club guests.
His wife Martina will also update supporters inside Anfield of the 52-year-old’s condition during a pitch-side interview in the half-time interval.
“The trip will be emotional and a little bit bittersweet,” she told the Pat Kenny Show.
“We’re getting him there, and that’s a really positive thing for him – I think it will be great for him.
“Liverpool have been amazing, and they’ve really come on board. Obviously they had the [charity] game in the Aviva… so I reckon they’ll be pulling out all the stops for Sean.
“It will give him a boost, I think, on Sunday.”
