Man jailed over fatal Birkenhead collision

A man has been jailed for dangerous driving that lead to a young woman’s death in  Birkenhead Town Centre.

Officers were called just before midnight on Saturday, 19th May 2018 to reports that a female pedestrian had been involved in a collision with a car on Conway Street.

Emergency services attended and the woman was taken to hospital but she sadly died as a result of her injuries.

Today, Carl White, pleaded guilty to causing death by dangerous driving.

He was sentenced to 4 years and 6 months in custody and disqualified from driving for 6 years and 3 months with a requirement to take an extended retest.

Sergeant Philip Mitchell from Merseyside Police Roads Policing Unit said: “It is very sad when a young person loses their life on one of our roads and I hope this sentencing brings some kind of closure for the family. This was a tragic and avoidable accident where a young woman lost her life and her family are now sadly having to live their lives without her.

“Drivers must remember that their car could become a lethal weapon when they do not take due care and attention on our roads. I would encourage everyone to be more thoughtful about other drivers and pedestrians to make sure fatal collisions like this one do not happen again.

“Driving dangerously can have serious and fatal consequences and I hope this shows others that they will be put before the courts and prosecuted it they are found guilty of a similar offence. I’d like to thank the public for their help and coming forward to share information as well as our first response officers and other emergency services who dealt with the aftermath of the incident and whose investigative tactics have led to today’s outcome.”
