Lorry causes Birkenhead Tunnel standstill

A lorry brought the Birkenhead Tunnel to a standstill after being caught in its lights.

The Queensway Tunnel was shut in both directions on Friday after the articulated vehicle had become jammed in the roof structure on the North John Street bend.

Merseytravel, who operate the tunnel, initially described it as a ‘police incident’

They have since confirmed that multiple light fittings from several areas of the tunnel were damaged during the incident, which was cleared around 4.30pm.

Bus routes in Liverpool city centre were also impacted by the four-hour delay, with Stagecoach diverting several services away from the affected area.

Arriva also reported a disruption to their own bus services and described the city centre as ‘gridlocked’ as a result of the Queensway Tunnel’s temporary closure.
