New Baltic Triangle development set to receive go-ahead

A new 15 storey tower block in the Baltic Triangle part of Liverpool city centre looks set to be approved by town planners.

The scheme, which comes as part of a wider, multi-phase residential development between Norfolk Street and Watkinson Street, would see a dual-purpose facility, featuring 253 apartments and a ground floor “Entrepreneurial Hub,” built in the designated World Heritage ‘buffer zone’ site.

The amended plans have been submitted by developers Equity Group Limited following complaints from Historic England and Liverpool Preservation Trust over the proposed height of the tower and its impact in relation to other key city landmarks, like the Anglican Cathedral, in the original proposals.

The planning report stipulated that the “key view” of the Liverpool skyline from Woodside terminal in Wirral should not be obscured by the development.

It said: “The proposed development would rise over the shoulder of the Cathedral and challenge the dominance of this landmark building on the skyline.”

However, new plans to reduce the tower from 20 storeys to 15 City council have been approved by experts, with a final decision due to be made by local councillors when the planning committee meet on Tuesday, April 19th.
