Rough sleeper dies in Liverpool city centre

A rough sleeper in Liverpool city centre has died amid freezing temperatures.

The man in his 40s was taken to hospital on Thursday where he passed away after concerns were raised when he was discovered in Victoria Street.

His death came a day after a fresh bout of cold weather arrived on Merseyside which prompted fears about the safety of homeless people in the local region.

Last month Liverpool City Council ordered that a cold weather shelter would remain open for rough sleepers when the temperatures dropped to two degrees.

The shelter at St Stephen’s Church can house up to 20 people who refuse to go into temporary accommodation but previously only opened in freezing conditions.
