Police have launched an inquiry after a group of men used a sledgehammer to break into a bank in Prescot.
The attempted robbery took place this morning at the Eccelston Street HSBC branch, discount as a man tried to smash through the main door using the sledgehammer.
The men briefly gained access to the bank, however they fled the scene empty handed shortly after, escaping in a dark colured car along Market Street.
Police were called by bank staff at around 9.25am following the attempted break in and Police have appealed to the local public for information.
“This was a frightening incident for the members of staff, and thankfully nobody was hurt”, said Detective Tony Kirk of Knowsley CID.
He also added, “we are keen to speak with any members of the public who saw the incident or a dark coloured car, possibly an Audi, in the vicinity of the bank. We believe this car had four men on board and drove away down Market Street.”
Anyone with information is asked to contact Knowsley CID on 0151 777 6561, or call 101, or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
