Tributes paid to Wirral man killed in bike crash

A man killed in a Wirral motorcycle collision has been hailed by his family as someone who ‘touched the hearts of us all’.

Barry Smith, from Oxton, died four days after the incident which took place at around 3pm o the M53 slip-road in Woodchurch on Friday, November 9.

The 69-year-old’s relatives have paid tribute to a devoted family man.

“Barry was a loving husband, father and grandfather who was adored by his family and liked by many others and touched the hearts of us all,” read a family statement.

“He died whilst riding his motorbike, something that he had done for many years and an activity that he enjoyed.

“Our family has been left devastated by the events of last Friday and we are overwhelmed by the kind messages of support we have received.

“But we would now ask for some privacy to begin to come to terms with what has happened.

“We would like to join the police in asking anyone who may have witnessed what happened to make contact with the police.”

Merseyside Police are still investigating the circumstances which led to Mr Smith’s death and have appealed to any eyewitnesses to come forward.

Constable Kurt Timpson, from the force’s Roads Policing Unit, said: “The investigation into this tragic collision is still in its early stages.

“We would appeal to anyone who witnessed the incident or the events leading up to it, or has any information that could help enquiries and has not yet spoken to us to contact us.”
