Liverpool Central renovations hit by cash shortage

Plans to renovate Liverpool Central have been put on hold due to a lack of funding.

A new lift was set to be installed at the city centre station as part of the Access For All initiative to make improve accessibility across the UK’s rail networks.

But a letter from transport minister Paul Maynard to Merseyside MP Louise Ellman has revealed that the project will now be deferred for a minimum of two years.

He told the Riverside representative, who chairs the House of Commons’ transport select committee, that funding is likely to be available in 2019.

“I am appalled by this decision,” Mrs Ellman told the Liverpool Echo.

“It is essential that everyone has proper access to Liverpool Central Station, a vitally important part of Merseyside’s transport network.”
