Hammer killer of mother and daughter jailed for life

A man who killed a mother and daughter in Anfield has been handed a life sentence.

Anthony Showers will serve a minimum term of 29-and-a-half years behind bars after bludgeoning Karen and Jade Hales at a house on Cathedral Road this year.

The 42-year-old murdered Jade, 28, and her mother, 53, after breaking into the address armed with a hammer in the early morning of June 12.

Showers also raped his girlfriend during her dying moments as well as killing the family dog in the brutal attack, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

The court also heard that he had already been subject to a banning order from visiting the house after subjecting Jade to domestic abuse during their on-off relationship.

Judge Timothy King told the defendant: “You bludgeoned each of your victims to death using that hammer with severe force.

“These, on any view, were brutal attacks on two innocent victims. Both were vulnerable.

“No words of mine can properly express the depth and reality of the grief and loss you have caused to the families of Jade and Karen.

“Jade was a petite lady in need of protection from you. Karen in particular was disabled, only able to walk with a zimmer frame.

“The evidence is overwhelming that you were angry and frustrated that Jade would not answer your calls and would not open the front door to let you in.”
