Man hospitalised after ‘unprovoked’ city centre attack

A man was left unconscious following an ‘unprovoked assault’ in Liverpool city centre.

The victim, a man in his 30s, was waiting for a taxi when the incident took place outside Heaven nightclub on Victoria Street in the early hours of Monday.

At around 5am, the victim was approached by a man who punched him once, causing him to briefly lose consciousness.

A friend of the victim chased the man down the road before he got into a black Hackney taxi close to the Filling Station takeaway, and the taxi drove off.

Police have released CCTV images of a man they wish to speak to in connection with the incident, which saw the victim taken to hospital where he remains.

Detective Inspector Steve Christian from Liverpool CID said: “This appears to have been a completely unprovoked assault, which could have easily resulted in serious injuries or worse.

“I would urge the man pictured to come forward as soon as possible to help with our enquiries. We believe that the victim and the man pictured may have spoken inside the nightclub earlier in the night.”

Anyone with information about this incident should call Liverpool CID on 0151 777 4065, call 101, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
