A 73-year-old woman is in hospital after a shooting on a Netherley doorstep which police believe was a ‘targeted attack’.
Emergency services were called to an address on Peckmill Green shortly after 6.10pm on Tuesday to reports the woman had been shot by one of two men on a motorbike outside.
The motorbike was then ridden in the direction of Wood Lane before the woman has been taken to hospital for treatment to a leg injury.
Her condition is described as stable and her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.
The full circumstances and motive behind the incident are currently unclear but Merseyside Police believe that the women was the victim of a ‘targeted’ attack.
Detectives from the force’s Matrix Serious Organised Crime unit are leading the investigation into the shooting and uniformed officers have stepped up patrols in Netherley to provide reassurance to the local community.
Detective Chief Inspector Mark Tivendale said: “We are keeping an open mind as to why this has happened and the investigation is in its early stages.
“Our priority is to establish who is responsible and to bring them to justice.
“Criminals who choose to settle their disputes with a weapon do not care about the widespread fear they bring to their own communities.
“We cannot and will not stand by and let people like that rule the roost.
“But to achieve safer streets we need the public to tell what they know about the criminals and I promise we will take robust action and put these people before the courts and in to the prisons.
“If you know something, please come forward – silence could result in someone being seriously injured, or killed in the future.”
Anyone who witnessed the incident or saw anything suspicious that could help with this investigation is urged to contact Merseyside Police’s gun crime hotline on 0800 230 0600 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
