Each year the same thing happens. We finally get used to having a heat wave, and then all of a sudden the temperature drops and the blustery rain sets in. It is the typical British summertime! However, as the colder months approach, it means shorter days, long chilly nights and plenty of frost… but don’t despair. There are a host of reasons to love the cooler months, and this guide tells you why!
Snow
When it snows in the UK, it can feel like magic. You wake up in the morning and look outside to see a white blanket that makes everything look pretty, so you head outside with the family to make the biggest snowman ever! Snow also means snow-days, where kids and parents are often unable to get to school and work. This means a day off and an opportunity to spend some quality time with each other! So get those hats and scarves out, and feel like a kid again as you go whizzing down a hill on your sledge.
The Celebration Season
Winter time is when we have some of the biggest celebrations of the year. At Christmastime, homes light up the streets with decorative lights; public buildings usually have large Christmas trees, and everything has a twinkle of festive glow about it. Even if you don’t enjoy the build-up to Christmas, when it gets here the festive atmosphere is always nice. After the Christmas festivities are over, we then have the party of the year with New Year celebrations!
A Winter Holiday
It is always good to have something to look forward to, so why not enjoy looking for winter holiday deals and get a little sunshine to top you up? Getting away for a week during the coldest weather can feel wonderful, and you have the added benefit of having a fresh summer glow when you get back home.
Cosy Evenings
One of the pleasures of the cooler months is snuggling up for cosy evenings. If you have an open fire, you can melt some marshmallows or roast chestnuts as you enjoy a hot cup of cocoa or a nice glass of wine. Or, just light a few candles and cosy up with a good book and your duvet!
Adventure
For those of us that like to be active, autumn and winter are a great time to try some adventure activities. Go hiking, or head to the mountains and try some snowboarding or skiing! Or, if you like the idea of winter sports without the chilliness of being out there in the elements, visit an indoor ice skating rink or ski slope for fun in the snow, where you can quickly warm up again afterwards.
The cooler months, while perhaps not being everyone’s preference, do have their own feel and charm. Wintertime can be enjoyed, rather than just endured, so wrap up against the elements and get out there and enjoy this magical time of year!
