Liverpool City Council launches ‘Shops for £1’ scheme

Liverpool City Council have launched a Shops for £1 programme in a bid to increase urban regeneration within the city.

The Local Authority scheme follows on from the Houses for £1 scheme, and will target the abandoned business units on Smithdown and Earle Road.

Successful applicants to the scheme will pay £1 a week in rent for three years, and operate from a refitted version of one the designated buildings.

“We are giving people with a passion and a commitment to the area the chance to create a new business and be part of an exciting regeneration project in Picton, said Deputy Mayor Ann O’Byrne.

Work on the housing project is set to start imminently, with proposals for the shops being accepted by the Council up until Monday 9 May.

Restrictions are in place to prevent gambling establishments, tanning salons, pay day loan shops, fast food takeaways and pubs/ off licences from benefitting the scheme, while coffee shops and healthy food takeaways will be considered.
