Jamie Carragher is facing potential bankruptcy over an unpaid tax bill.
HMRC filed a petition against James Lee Duncan Carragher through its legal representatives at the High Court in London on Wednesday (August 26).
The ex-defender spent his entire career at Liverpool, where he became the club’s second-highest appearance holder and won seven major trophies.
Since returning in 2013, Carragher has successfully made the move into punditry as a leading figure in Sky Sports’ Premier League coverage.
Alongside co-presenting Sky’s Monday Night Football, Carragher is also a staple of CBS’ Champions League studio panel in the United States.
HMRC were unable to comment on individual cases but insist that the petition for bankruptcy is taken as a ‘last resort’ by the government’s tax body.
A spokesperson said: “We take a supportive approach to dealing with customers who have tax debts and do everything we can to help those who engage with us to get out of debt, such as offering instalment plans.
“We only petition for bankruptcy as a last resort.”
