One of the world’s most iconic choreographers is hosting a free Liverpool workshop.
Aspiring performers and dance enthusiasts will receive expertise from LaVelle Smith Jr, who has worked with the likes of Beyonce and Michael Jackson.
Taking place at The Black E on Saturday, September 27 at 12.15pm, the renowned choreographer, dancer, and creative consultant is set to offer up three decades worth of experience.
Smith Jr has worked with some of the biggest names in global entertainment, including Beyonce, Usher, Diana Ross, Chris Brown, Destiny’s Child, Janet Jackson, En Vogue, TLC, George Michael, Ricky Martin, Brandy, and most famously the King of Pop himself.
Smith’s artistry has extended beyond the stage and concert arena into film, where he choreographed the sensual sequences of Coyote Ugly and the comedic moves of Jim Carrey in The Cable Guy.
His influence in dance has been recognized with multiple accolades, including nominations for the Music Video Producer’s Association Award, the SSDC Bob Fosse Award,, and an Emmy nomination in 1996 for Outstanding Choreography.
He has won five MTV Awards for Best Choreography, including one in 2004 for Beyoncé’s iconic ‘Crazy in Love’ music video.
In addition, Smith has been honoured with the Miller Hall of Greats Award (1994), induction into the DuPont Manual Hall of Fame (2006), and a Lifetime Achievement Award (2006) for innovation in dance and choreography, followed by the Dance Media Honors Award (2007).
Smith’s connection to Michael Jackson defined much of his career. The two first met in 1986 on the set of ‘Smooth Criminal’, sparking a creative partnership and friendship that would span more than two decades.
Smith danced on Jackson’s legendary Bad Tour, and served as both dancer and choreographer on the Dangerous and HIStory world tours. Together, they crafted performances that have become timeless hallmarks of stage and screen, inspiring countless dancers across generations.
Reflecting on his time with Jackson, Smith often emphasizes the lessons he learned about performance artistry — how to capture an audience, embrace silence, and let movement speak. “The dances we created together will stand as bright beacons in the universe forever,” he has said.
Now, as he continues to share his knowledge and passion, LaVelle Smith Jr brings his artistry to Liverpool, offering dancers of all levels the rare opportunity to learn directly from one of the most decorated choreographers in the music industry.
This free masterclass promises not only to be a celebration of dance but also a living continuation of the powerful legacy that Smith and Michael Jackson built together – an invitation to experience the rhythm, discipline, and magic that have defined modern performance for decades.
This special showcase is part of African Routes 2025, a landmark programme celebrating African and diasporic heritage
