Merseytravel is set to be rebranded for the first time in four decades.
The public transport provider’s name has been commonplace after it began serving the greater Merseyside region under that guise since the mid-1980s.
But the body, which oversees the local rail network, the Mersey Tunnels and ferry services, will be renamed Transport for Liverpool City Region (TFLCR).
The change was a key pledge in Steve Rotheram’s manifesto as he was successfully re-elected the combined authority’s Metro Mayor in May.
It is planned to bring the Liverpool City Region in line with Manchester and London in terms of having their own distinct regional transport branding.
A new logo is being designed for introduction by the end of 2024 but a set date for the complete rollout of the name change has yet to be confirmed.
“The planned name change from Merseytravel to Transport for Liverpool City Region better reflects the area served by our public transport network, which extends beyond the boundaries of Merseyside and includes the Borough of Halton,” said a spokesperson for LCR.
“The familiar yellow ‘M’ will remain a symbol of public transport within the city region as we strive to deliver a modern, environmentally-friendly, joined-up system that is quick, simple, affordable and accessible to all and provides a genuine alternative to the car’.”
