Klopp’s assistants line up new coaching roles

Two of Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool backroom staff have already lined up new jobs.

The current Anfield brains trust is set to be disbanded this summer as Klopp prepares to take his last game at the helm against Wolves this weekend.

Many of the German’s lieutenants are also set to move on with no fewer than five coaches confirming plans to cut ties with the Reds since January’s announcement.

Assistants Pep Lijnders and Peter Krawietz, coach Vitor Matos, goalkeeper coach John Achterberg and head of conditioning Andreas Kornmayer will all leave the club.

But Lijnders has been swiftly headhunted by Sadio Mane’s former club Red Bull Salzburg to take the reins with them on a three-year contract from this summer.

Back in 2018, the Dutchman had a short spell in his homeland as head coach of NEC Nijmegen before rejoining Liverpool’s coaching ranks at Klopp’s request.

Lijnders is set to resume that managerial journey with the Austrian Bundesliga outfit, who risk missing out on an 11th straight title as they trail Sturm Graz by two points.

He said: “This is a real privilege for me.

“After PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto and Liverpool FC, I am now moving to another exceptional club with a really good structure and a particular focus on youth development.

“I want to develop a mentality with the team that places a lot of emphasis on attacking style of play and where passion and hunger for success are the basis of everything.

“Together with my assistant coach Vitor Matos and the entire support team, we will do our best to help the club continue to grow in an ever-changing football world.

“My family has visited the city before and was overwhelmed by its beauty and the friendliness of the people.

“That was the last and important step for me in choosing FC Red Bull Salzburg.”

Following the 41-year-old to the Red Bull Arena is outgoing elite development coach Matos, who will be assistant manager duties at a club boasting several Liverpool links.

Current midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai spent three seasons with Salzburg while former fan favourites Sadio Mane and Naby Keita also honed their craft there.
