Liverpool Legends produced a second-half comeback to overcome Ajax.
Sven-Goran Eriksson soaked up the applause from a sell-out Anfield crowd ahead of fulfilling a lifelong ambition by taking charge of his beloved team.
Derk Boerrigter opened the scoring for the visitors with barely three minutes on the clock as he slotted comfortably past Jerzy Dudek in front of The Kop.
The Dutch giants went further ahead shortly before half time through Kiki Musampa’s half-volley which left their hosts facing a mountain to climb.
But Gregory Vignal reduced a much-changed Reds’ deficit in the second half with a sweeping finish before Djibril Cisse later headed home an equaliser.
Nabil El Zhar handed the hosts the lead in the game’s final quarter with a surging run and well-taken strike before Fernando Torres slid in a fourth.
Speaking exclusively to Click Liverpool, Ronald de Boer admitted that he savoured the occasion almost 30 years since playing at Anfield in Euro 96.
He said: “Unfortunately when I came on it all went down!
“The fans enjoyed it which is the most important thing. It was almost a full stadium so the credit goes to the fans for coming on a Saturday afternoon and see us old guys playing.
“It was amazing and I think we tried to give a good show. We started well and at the end Liverpool came back very strongly.
“I think 4-2 is also a great ending also for Sven-Goran Eriksson to have his victory.”
