Michael Edwards is on the verge of a surprise return to Liverpool.

Edwards left his post as Anfield’s sporting director in 2021 after a decade in which he was credited as a driving force of the club’s rise under Jurgen Klopp.

The 44-year-old has rejected approaches from several clubs since departing and is currently a consultant for the sports advisory business Ludonautics.

Reds’ owners Fenway Sports Group were also rebuffed when making a tentative initial approach about his potential return to back in January.

But discussions between the Americans and Edwards are understood to be progressing well as Liverpool attempt to stabilise in their post-Klopp era.

His role is expected to be as FSG’s overseer of football operations than a return as the sporting director, which Jorge Schmadtke’s vacated last month.

Bournemouth’s technical director Richard Hughes remains the forerunner to succeed Schmadtke after the South Coast club confirmed his own exit plans.

The Scot’s candidacy for Liverpool’s key behind-the-scenes role is boosted by a well-documented friendship with Edwards which has spanned two decades.
