Liverpool’s former record-breaking player Max Thompson has died aged 66.

Thompson signed professional forms with his hometown club and went on to become the club’s youngest-ever debutant against Tottenham in May 1974.

The former defender’s feat would stand for a full 36 years, when it was broken by fellow homegrown defender Jack Robinson in the 2009/10 season.

Thompson made only one further appearance during his three seasons with the Reds as a substitute in a 6-0 win over Real Sociedad in the UEFA Cup.

He spent loan spells with Dallas Tornado and Blackpool, leaving Anfield permanently for the latter in 1978, before representing clubs across the globe.

After calling time on his playing career, Thompson studied football injuries which led to him rejoining Liverpool as a physio during the early 1990s.
