Klopp reveals ‘torture’ of Champions League final

Jurgen Klopp has revealed the ‘proper torture’ of rewatching Liverpool’s Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Klopp’s side welcome the reigning European champions for Tuesday’s last-16 tie at Anfield which will be a rematch of the previous season’s showpiece tie.

Vinicius Jr’s second-half strike proved to be the difference between the clubs at Paris’ Stade de France last May as the Reds’ quadruple quest fell short.

And Klopp admits that he held off on watching back over the encounter in the French capital until last weekend in preparation for the visit of Los Blancos.

He said: “I didn’t watch it back since then until this weekend.

The thing I realised immediately was that now I know why I didn’t watch it back, but I had to.

“It was proper torture, because we played a good game and we could have won the game, and ‘could’ is the decisive word, because we didn’t. They scored a decisive goal, we didn’t.

“You could see in this game how experienced Madrid is, how little they are fussed when the other team has chances.

“They don’t lose confidence in one second. They know their chance will come. They defend together. That’s what you can learn from them, definitely.”
