Liverpool have signed Juventus midfielder Arthur Melo on a season-long loan.

Jurgen Klopp had targeted players in the central position after a spate of injuries but admitted a deal appeared unlikely before the transfer deadline.

However Jordan Henderson’s hamstring injury in Wednesday night’s late win over Newcastle forced the German to reassess that original recruitment plan.

Henderson is the fourth midfielder to be sidelined in the early weeks of the season alongside Thiago Alcantara, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Reds’ captain will undergo a scan in the next 24 hours on the problem which forced him off midway through the second half against the Magpies.

In light of the 32-year-old’s potential absence, Klopp turned his attention to a short-term deal for Arthur, who played 31 times for Juventus last term.

The Brazil international, 26, had originally joined the Serie A giants from Barcelona in a swap deal with Miralem Pjanic during summer 2020.

He said: “I’ve played against Liverpool [in 2019], I know what it feels like to be in the stadium with the fans behind them.

“I was with the opposition and now I’m on the right side so I’m really excited. It’s a massive club with a great manager and great players.

“It’s a dream to be here.”

Juventus confirmed that Liverpool have committed to a £3.87 million loan fee with the option to make the deal permanent next summer for around £32.3M.
