Virgil van Dijk believes Harvey Elliott and Fabio Carvalho will continue to progress for Liverpool despite potential new incomings.

Elliott scored his first Premier League goal while Carvalho also opened his account for Jurgen Klopp’s side in Saturday’s 9-0 thrashing of Bournemouth.

A spate of injuries thrust the teenage pair into the spotlight at the start of the new campaign, with Klopp now openly looking at midfield reinforcements.

But Van Dijk has tipped both players to still play key roles for the Reds over the coming months.

“I don’t think they will stop progressing,” said the defender.

“If you look at the amount of games we play, we need a lot of midfielders. They win so many balls for us and they are the engine of the team.

“You see in the games we play also, we rotate a lot in midfield apart from Fabinho I think. We need everyone.

“Harvey [did well] obviously before his injury and I think now already he’s showing the same stuff as before.

“I’ve been impressed with Fabio as well. I think he can be really, really good for us and as a club as well.

He added: “Obviously you need the maturity as well at times and especially when things are not going well like th last couple of weeks.

“These guys have the right mentality that we need and they showed it.

“They will have good moments but they’ll also have moments they have to learn from and that’s how football works.

“We’re not robots, we’re not perfect and everyone expects that we are but we’re not.”
