Lijnders joins Liverpool’s COVID-19 casualty list

Pep Lijnders has become Liverpool’s latest Covid-19 casualty.

Jurgen Klopp’s assistant was due to preview the Carabao Cup semi-final with Arsenal on Wednesday but returned a suspected positive coronavirus test.

The 38-year-old had took charge of the Reds’ showdown with Chelsea last weekend due to Klopp isolating along with three of his first-team squad.

Alisson, Roberto Firmino and Joel Matip all missed the 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge while Klopp was ruled out on the eve of the Premier League clash.

Liverpool’s three senior goalkeeping coaches also missed the game in London, where Klopp’s side are scheduled to face the Gunners on Thursday evening.

Anfield chiefs have asked for the last four meeting at the Emirates Stadium to be postponed due to their squad being decimated by Covid and other issues.

The EFL is currently assessing the reasons behind the requested deferral as Liverpool were unable to hold a training session on Tuesday afternoon.

A club statement read: “With no prospect of the current situation improving ahead of Thursday’s fixture and the potential for it to worsen, the club considers it both prudent and reasonable to ask for the fixture to be rescheduled.”
