Anyone who hasn’t been hibernating under a pretty sizeable rock for the last few years will have noticed that TikTok has become the zeitgeist-defining social media platform of the moment. While, in essence, the app is little more than the dearly departed “Vine” with a fresh coat of paint, something about it has captured the imaginations of millions of young people across the world. And it’s not just teenagers that are being inspired by it either.
Indeed, thousands of home design enthusiasts have begun using the Chinese social media platform as an ideas board for their own home renovation ideas.
How social media can influence style and trends
In years past, we looked to magazines for our inspiration when it came to design. But today, we have literally millions of stylish homes to peruse and steal ideas from at our fingertips 24 hours a day thanks to our smartphones. The go-to locations for ideas were always Instagram or Pinterest but recently TikTok has overtaken even those social media stalwarts.
The rise in TikTok housing trends
Research from comparison site confused.com found that the #diy had been trending with over 107 billion views earlier this year. Videos that were being watched showed users doing everything from installing walk-in showers to showing followers how to apply shower sealants. It’s a hyper-condensed version of the YouTube tutorial craze that took the world by storm a few years ago and it’s starting to have a serious impact on how people are redecorating.
Popular redecoration trends on TikTok include:-
- Flowery walls, which is a trend that is currently boasting over 30 million views. Of course, if you can’t afford actual flowers then there are lots of flowered wallpaper options.
- Upcycled pallet furniture is another popular trend on the app and has seen everything from coffee tables to beds made out of recycled wooden palettes.
- Mirrors are also a big deal on TikTok. Everything from DIY vanity bulb mirrors to mirror walls.
Know your limits
While you could understandably call it little more than a bit of harmless fun, TikTok trends can actually be bad for your home in certain situations. Indeed, research has shown that 39% of TikTok so-called DIY “hacks” are actually likely to damage your home in the long run.
The key is in knowing which trends are going to work and which are not. Because a gothic Bauhaus style design might look cool but the actuality of it is something else entirely. If you don’t know what you’re doing and are following haphazard advice then you could end up hurting yourself or damaging your home. This is why we’d always recommend getting an expert opinion before trying out any TikTok design ideas on your own home.
