Rafael Benitez insists James Rodriguez remains in Everton’s plans for the time being.
Speculation over Rodriguez’s future has continued since Benitez succeeded Carlo Ancelotti, with Atletico Madrid the most recent to be touted with a move for him.
Goodison Park chiefs informed the Colombia international that he would be free to leave the club in the current transfer window if a suitable offer was received.
Rodriguez was absent from the Blues’ win over Southampton last weekend due to Covid self-isolation and is now also due to miss Saturday’s clash with Leeds.
He conceded on his Twitch stream that he was unaware that his teammates would be taking on Marcelo Bielsa’s side in their second new-season fixture.
But Benitez claimed on Friday that the 30-year-old is still in his thoughts despite hinting that the transfer deadline will have a significant bearing on that stance.
“I understand that people want to know everything, but the situation is that he is our player until August 31,” said the Everton manager.
“He was not available last week and he’s not available this week but maybe he will be available next week.
“Hopefully we can just carry on with the training sessions and see what happens at the end of the transfer window.”
He added: “Until the 31st August – yes, he’s in my plans.”
