Court row delays Futurist Cinema repairs

Work was able to restart this morning to make the Futurist cinema facade safe. It was halted yesterday by yet another court battle between Liverpool City Council and heritage campaigners.

Moves to begin repairing the building on Lime Street was forced to stop shortly after it had begun when SAVE Britain’s Heritage went in to court over the plans to remove the buildings frontage.

The cinema has been the focus of a campaign launched by heritage groups opposing the redevelopment of the site.

The initial plan to bulldoze the building was rejected by the Court of Appeal earlier this month and plans had to be recreated to meet the court order.

The work to dismantle the building is likely to lead to the closure of Lime Street for four days.

Today the urgent work to dismantle the building got going again – which is resulting in the closure of Lime Street for up to four days.

A cherry picker and crane are dismantling parts of the building as it has been deemed to unsafe for workers to enter the site.

Each piece of the frontage will be removed and lowered to the ground where it will be stacked on pallets, wrapped and stored within the building.
