Joanne Anderson has made history as the new Mayor of Liverpool.
The Princes Park ward councillor became the first black woman to become the directly-elected leader of any major UK city with Friday’s local election result.
Anderson secured just over 38.5% of the vote in the first round of Thursday’s local elections with independent candidate Stephen Yip recording 21.79%.
A second count was required as a result with voters’ secondary choices, by which point Anderson, 50, won a comfortable majority to be elected Mayor.
She recorded an overall tally of 46,493, beating Mr Yip by 14,414 votes.
Cllr Anderson is only the second appointed Mayor of Liverpool following the resignation of Joe Anderson (no relation) in December in a corruption probe.
She said: “We have so much opportunity ahead of us, particularly as we build the city that we want post-Covid.
“We need to build a city that looks after its people, that is fair and caring, that is transparent but also that is aspirational and that’s what I want to do.”
