Gary O’Neil has left his role as part of Liverpool’s under-23 coaching setup.
The former midfielder originally joined the Premier League champions’ developmental squad in August 2020 to serve as assistant to Barry Lewtas.
But O’Neil departs after six months to take up a role at Bournemouth, where one-time Reds scout Jonathan Woodgate has been installed as manager.
Woodgate will be in charge at the Vitality Stadium for the remainder of this season, with the Cherries aiming to secure promotion from the Championship.
And O’Neil’s ex-Middlesbrough teammate explained on Tuesday why he chose to add the 37-year-old to his first-team coaching setup on the South Coast.
“I’ve known Gary for a number of years, having played with him at Middlesbrough,” said Woodgate.
“He comes highly recommended from Liverpool and has a great knowledge of the game and an appetite to never stop learning.
“Gary is going to bring something different to the coaching staff.
“He’s a new voice to the players, someone who has no connection to Bournemouth and I believe that an outside pair of eyes are important for us.”
