FA investigate Cenk Tosun goal celebration

Cenk Tosun faces a Football Association probe over his goal celebration.

The striker’s late second-half effort in Everton’s FA Cup third round win over Rotherham on Saturday was disallowed by VAR for an offside infraction.

However the Turkey international’s response to scoring caused controversy amid allegations he had made a hand gesture in support of a far-right group.

Tosun denied post-match that there was any truth that his celebration was a homage to the Grey Wolves, an ultranationalist organisation in his homeland.

But the FA are now exploring whether the 29-year-old’s action of pointing skyward carried any link to the group, who were outlawed in France last year.

English football’s governing body has a zero tolerance on players making gestures or statements about organisations likely to offend numerous people.

Tosun was one of 16 Turkey players reprimanded by UEFA in late 2019 for performing a military salute while celebrating one of their country’s goals.

The act was interpreted as support for the Turkish army against the Kurds in Syria, with the £27 million marksman claiming it was ‘for our nation, especially for the ones who are risking their lives for our nation’.

Goodison Park officials remain confident that the FA’s investigation will exonerate Tosun, who is a popular member within the club’s dressing room.
