Klopp backs Premier League fixture criticisms

Jurgen Klopp has backed growing criticisms of the Premier League’s fixture congestion.

Liverpool saw Trent Alexander-Arnold forced off during the second half of their 1-1 draw at Manchester City on Sunday with a suspected calf injury.

Alexander-Arnold has now been ruled out of England’s upcoming international games and becomes the 13th Reds player to be sidelined already this season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer raised scheduling issues after Manchester United had to play at 12.30pm on Saturday following a midweek Champions League fixture.

And Klopp admits that he fears more players will pick up injuries due to the hectic turnaround in matches in a compressed programme this season.

He said: “We played after the last international break at 12.30pm on Saturday at Everton.

“Some of my players were in Peru on [the previous] Wednesday night. These kind of things should not happen. Everything’s changed apart from the fixture list.

“People might like it and think it’s a proper competition that gives others a chance. The problem is injuries. It’s not about Man United or Liverpool, or City.

“Again, we have to talk again about the five subs. Maybe if 14 teams say no and six do, then let us make five subs when we play each other.”

Reflecting on the game, the Liverpool manager was full of praise for a four-pronged front line of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Diogo Jota.

“I liked the whole game. The start was the best period. We scored our goal, and then were not that compact anymore and they score,” added Klopp.

“Usually when we play City, they have more clear-cut chances. That’s a credit to my boys.

“Tonight, it [front four] worked really well. We wanted to use the power of the four up front in specific moments to cause City problems.

“It needed a while for City to adapt to it. It will not be the last time we use it.”
